2021 SWANA Landfill Challenges Summit

How PFAS can affect Waste Management from Planning via Design to Operations

Thursday, June 17, 2021 | 2:20 p.m. EDT

Research and observations indicate that landfills have the ability to sequester PFAS from discarded products. On an annual basis more PFAS is landfilled than released to the environment with leachate, the primary pathway, landfill gas, and fugitive emissions. With more detailed and site-specific information it will be possible to identify outliers and develop a more nuanced understanding of PFAS dynamics at landfills. In the meantime, owners and operators require information how regulation could affect landfill operation and possible capital investments.

This half-day, virtual event will bring together landfill, landfill gas, and biogas professionals from throughout the United States and Canada. Industry experts from the public and private sectors will discuss current and future challenges that are expected to impact landfill operations and landfill gas production, and what lessons can be applied as we move forward. Get the latest session schedule here.

Please join ROCHEM Americas, Inc. June 17th at the online 2021 SWANA Landfill Challenges Summit for his presentation "Why Landfills are the Only Immediate Answer to Removing PFAS from the Environment.” Learn why landfills should see PFAS as an opportunity, instead of a problem.

Rock Solid: Evaluating Solidification of PFAS in RO Concentrate

March 11 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST - $25 per person

Our speakers include:

Paul Ruehl, Environmental Remediation Coordinator, LafargeHolcim

Ryan Schipper, PE, Senior Engineer, Golder Associates

How does this strategy work alongside existing technologies and what do the experts have to say about them? During this session, waste industry experts will discuss the following:

  • Typical treatment technologies and residual management options

  • Use of reverse osmosis as treatment of PFAS in leachate

  • Residual solidification/stabilization

  • Effectiveness of these treatments

  • Where additional science and research are needed to employ these strategies
